Studies in red and green . . .

. . . our first efforts at growing chard. Is it meant to shoot up like this? There never seemed to be enough pickable leaves on it to make a decent helping. But it is very sculptural! Flowers are simpler ... last year's birthday present survives. This year's geraniums . . .

Pinks and greens . . .

Each time a new baby arrives in our family I make him/her (mostly her) a small quilt for lying on the floor under the baby gym. The latest one, Leila, arrived in July but I forgot all about the quilt. We're visiting them soon so hurriedly this one was put together. it has bunnies and things in sleepsuits in the centre squares. And in the search for interesting colour combinations which I sometimes indulge in, this grabbed my attention - green peppers and sort of pinky-red onions being stir-fried.

Blue / orange, yellow / purple

On our visit to family last weekend, middle granddaughter (9) asked if she could borrow the camera. Good thing it is digital or all my film would have been used up! I think she snapped every flower in the garden!

But without my asking her to, she found several examples of these complementary pairs, if not in one flower then with flowers that had been planted next to each other.

Another complementary pair of colours

Back in the summer, when I was collecting reds and greens in the garden I said I'd have to wait till the crocuses were out for another complementary colour pair. But here are some nice little irises that were growing quietly in the greenhouse. Unfortunately the purples have not photographed with the true hues. Transfer the colour of the top pic to the one below it to see what the one with purple and yellow actually looks like. The top one is actually a real red-violet, not a trace of blue.
